The Green Acorn Guest house is centrally situated on the MALOTLI ROUTE, an exciting and innovative initiative that spans the borders between South Africa and the mountain kinqdom of Lesotho. The Route covers substantial areas of Lesotho the Eastern Cape and the Eastern Free State, opening up this scenic region and enriching the experiences of all who travel this way The Maloti Route provides travellers with on unparalleled opportunity to experience a diversity of cultures including Basotho, English, Xhosa and Afrikaans. It also provides an opportunity to contrast the two countries, which have very different histories, but are so intertwined geographically and culturally as to be committed to each other for the benefit of the entire region.
Lesotho’s mountainous terrain and high altitude has earned itself names such as the Kingdom in the Sky and the ‘Roof of Africa” after the well known annual off-road sporting event. Past and present co-exist harmoniously and modern vehicles can often be seen passing by the more traditional and still popular mode of transport the ‘Basotho Pony’ whose rider wears a colourful Lesotho blanket draped over his shoulders and the famous conical- shaped Lesotho hat - ‘mokorotlo’.
The Route through South Africa winds through predominantly agricultural lands, small towns and villages in both the Northern part of the Eastern Cape and the Eastem Free State.
The Maloti Route - a truly idyllic meander through awe inspiring natural beauty and picturesque mountains - where you can visit friendly villages and towns, follow where dinosaurs prowled and left footprints, enjoy arts and crafts of the highest quality, fly fish, visit renowned rock art sites or just soak up the breathtaking scenery For the more adventurous there are ski slopes, horse trails and 4x4 and hiking trails. Accommodation along the route includes farms & village stays, luxury lodges, self catering cottages and homely B&Bs.
Come and discover the Maloti Route, the ultimate adventure experience in the most scenic towns and villaqes within our untamed mountain vistas.
LESOTHO HIGHLANDS WATER PROJECT:
The breathtaking Katse Dam which has recently (1997) been completed in the Malibamatso Valley just below the Bokong River confluence.
This dam is second in size (in Africa) only to the Lake Volta Akosombo Dam in Ghana. The view of this massive dam from Mafika Lisiu Pass is magnificent and is often of great interest to visitors. The centre piece of the whole project is the dam wall which is the highest in Africa. An area of the lake will be devoted to water sports. |
